As a Professional:Jacki's early life was dedicated to dance and choreography. Her passion and talent led her to major in Dance with a Concentration in Choreography in college. But at the age of 21, Jacki found a new passion: Sales. She began her career in Sales and Marketing in 1996, and enjoyed great success and received numerous awards for her accomplishments. She realized it was her talent at creating and cultivating her professional relationships that let her enjoy a successful career in sales. Throughout the years, Jacki noticed that many people in the professional arena struggled to create meaningful relationships with clients, prospects, strategic partners, and co-workers.Combining her natural talent and developed skill as a speaker and writer, she developed the I Can Relate brand. It's true in all aspects of life. The difference in social media is that the information you're putting out there is potentially being broadcast to the whole world.I know first-hand, and was recently interviewed by KPHO CBS 5 News reporter Elizabeth Erwin because of it. But since social media strategy is a part of what I do in my business, I felt it important to give a few tips to help you Practice Safe Social Media!A few safety tips:1. Stop checking in and sharing it with the world! If you're using geolocation apps like Foursquare or Gowalla, keep your checkins private. You can still get the deals without creating a history of your favorite places for all the world to see. Stop letting it post to Twitter or Facebook. Speaking of Facebook....2. Don't use Facebook Places! I know many people SAY they're only connecting with people they are friends with in real life. But I challenge you to go through that friends list. How well do you REALLY know that guy you went to elementary school with 30 years ago? Or the person you met once at a friend's boyfriend's birthday happy hour. Or your co-worker from 3 years ago. And yet...here they are, connected to a platform where you use your real name, probably list your date of birth, and probably have pictures of your loved ones posted somewhere. So how you can you TRULY know their intent?3. Make sure OTHERS can't check you in using Facebook Places. Here's how: Log into Facebook In the upper right, click the drop down arrow on "Account" Choose "Privacy Settings" In the middle of the page, choose "Customize Settings" Scroll down to "Friends can check me in to Places" Choose "Edit settings" Change "enabled" to "disabled" Click "okay"Now you're not allowing someone else to advertise you're out somewhere if you're in a group setting. Many times people are unaware they've been "checked in." Even if this weren't a safety issue, it's still a privacy issue.Like Krys Vanslyke states in this video interview, "When it comes to privacy, you don't need to worry about what the average person would do." It's no secret that the recession has brought about many changes in our world. But not all of these changes are negative. People trying to live within their means, bad business practices exposed, the overall greed-factor decreasing significantly, the list of positive effects goes on.My favorite is wrapped up in the saying "Meaning is the New Currency." I believe this to be true. Actually, I believe it's not the "new" currency. It's the currency we were meant to exchange all along, we just somehow lost sight of that fact somewhere in the economic boom. So if meaning is currency, I have to ask: What are you doing now to increase your Purpose Portfolio?We have been issued a wake up call, and many Americans have stopped hitting the snooze button. Money isn't everything. Creating wealth isn't the end all. Materialism isn't all it's cracked up to be. Not that money is BAD or EVIL. Quite the contrary. It's necessary, and the more we have the more we can contribute to the greater good. When you have a healthy net-worth, you are free to inject money into the economy. You are free to provide yourself and your loved ones with experiences that will enrich lives. You can enjoy material items that bring joy.Simply stated, money is NOT the root of all evil. It's the LOVE of money that brings misery.But we, as a society, have realized that money isn't enough. Purpose, meaning, self-awareness, our legacy, giving back to our community...THESE are the reasons we're placed on Earth to begin with. And so it is that the phrase "Meaning is the New Currency" has become a popular adage.We were never given life to simply amass wealth. It is our destiny to leave this world a better place than when we first arrived. Life isn't a random act. Each one of us were created with unique gifts and talents. It's our calling to USE those talents to help our fellow man. To create good. To reach out to others. What purpose are you living for today? What are you doing to increase your Purpose Portfolio? Finding Your Way - looking at obstacles in a new light

In today's world, we're all too familiar with things not going as planned. We wake up every day and do the things we believe will work. The things we've been trained to do. The things we've done in the past to bring success. And we go home at the end of the day, feeling drained because they just don't seem to be working. Maybe you are one of the many people in our business world that are suffering because of the economy. Loss of employment, a cut in wages, inability to find new business, having to close your business, the list goes on. I see these effects around me every day, as I'm sure we all do. But as people are running around feeling at a loss of what to do next, I can't help but think that the answers are right there just waiting to be noticed. Is our success in the past holding us back from the success that awaits us in the present and future? There's a story that keeps coming to mind lately, and I think the point of the story bears reflection in our current economic state. It's from the movie Apollo 13, based on the true account of the Apollo 13 space shuttle that never made it to the moon, and almost didn't make it home. Do you remember the scene in the movie when Captain Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks) is being interviewed about a precarious flight experience? He was flying his plane, coming in for a landing on his aircraft carrier. The carrier was operating with no lights, and Lovell's homing signal was blocked, actually leading him away from where he needed to go. Suddenly, a short in the electrical system on his aircraft caused all of the instrument panel lights to go out. He was thinking of ejecting into the ocean, when he looked down and saw the phosphorescent glow of the ocean being churned up in the wake of the carrier on which he needed to land. He made the point that if the lights hadn't gone out, he never would've seen the path that led him to a safe landing. "You never know what events will transpire to get you home." I find the point of this story to be profound: circumstances that seem disastrous are actually the very things needed to bring us to a better place. Lately, I've been noticing many people who are embarking on exciting new adventures. The thing they all seem to have in common? They found their adventures because of a past or recent "failure." I want to encourage you to begin to see your circumstances as positive, no matter what. So how do we do that? I can speak to this out of personal experience as well as through research. Here are a few suggestions on how to shift your thinking regarding seemingly negative circumstances: 1. Remember the blessings. No matter what is going on around you, I guarantee that there are things to be grateful for. At the end of every day, make it a priority to focus on these things. There are many ways to maintain an attitude of gratitude: Make a list and write down the top 5 things you are thankful for. Say a prayer of thanks to God for specific blessings before you go to bed. Sit with your family members and share the highlights of your day with each other. Keep a journal focused on blessings rather than drama. 2. Know what you really want out of life. What are your long term goals? When you have the answer to that, you can start to see how the things transpiring today can benefit those goals in the long run. Take this opportunity while life seems to be up in the air to make the necessary changes that will lead you to your dreams. 3. Keep things in perspective. Is it REALLY that bad? What is the worst thing that can happen as a result of the "bad" things going on in your life? Is it losing your house, not being able to pay the bills, filing bankruptcy, downgrading your living situation? While these things sound scary, they really aren't the end of the world. And while going through them isn't desirable, it's only temporary. You WILL recover, life WILL go on, your loved ones will STILL love you. And most importantly, you WILL grow as a person because of the hardships. 4. Be willing to learn the lesson. Every so-called failure has a lesson attached to it. Open up your mind and let yourself recognize what that lesson is. Life has a funny way of repeating hard lessons until we actually acknowledge them, learn from them, and grow as a result of them. 5. Stop worrying about what other people think. I've never understood why we, as a society, are so wrapped up in living a life based on comparison. We strive for bigger, better, more. Here's the thing: the people that really love and care for you don't care where you live, what kind of car you drive, or what your net worth is. And the people who do judge you by these things don't really matter anyway. So let go of what others think, and you will be surprised how free you are as a result! 6. Accept the challenge of change. Be willing to move into another industry, take a second job, go back to school, take a so-called "lesser" position. All of these things can be beautiful transitions in our lives, but we'll never know it if we're too busy clinging to our preconceived notions on how our lives are "supposed to be." Embrace the changes going on around you, maintain an attitude of gratitude, and be willing to shift your thinking. If you can accomplish these things, you just may find that things aren't so bad after all. In fact, they may be better than ever. Jacki Semerau © Copyright 2010
